Swine flu blamed for Arab tourist fall

Salzburg tourism bosses have blamed swine flu for a 15 per cent drop in the number of Arab tourists in Salzburg’s Zell am See/Kaprun area.

Hans Wallner, director of tourism for the area, said today (Weds): "Demand for visits to our area was still high when we went on a marketing tour of Arab countries in May, but cancellations because of swine flu began occurring in June."

Wallner added the term swine flu was a problem for Arabs because the Koran calls pigs "unclean" animals.

He said though it was "too late" to do anything to counteract the negative impression the term had made in the Arab world.

Wallner said the timing of Ramadan, the month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, was also a problem for the area’s tourism industry.

Most Muslims wanted to stay at home during Ramadan, he explained, which meant Arab visitors would have left the Zell am See/Kaprun area by the middle of August and would probably not come back in late September.

Wallner said the local tourist industry can only hope that swine flu will no longer be a problem in summer 2010.

Arab visitors account for an average of 100,000 overnight stays each summer in the Zell am See/Kaprun area.

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in Austria has now reached 153 - with 138 of them coming in July as people returned from holidays abroad.

The health ministry said the first confirmed case in Austria had occurred on 28 April and there had then been no others until 2 June, and then only 14 confirmed cases in the entire month.

But the number rocketed in July, with new confirmed cases numbering 10 a day during the middle of the month, officials said.

Austrian Public Health General Director Hubert Hrabcik recently warned that a swine flu pandemic on the scale already seen in the UK would hit Austria.

He added that Austria’s strategy would change from "containment" to "mitigation" when a pandemic began.

The current strategy of containment includes the isolation in hospital of all patients suspected of having swine flu and laboratory tests to confirm the disease. Mitigation will feature fewer laboratory tests and more emphasis on proper treatment of cases at home.

Experiencing the Spirit by Henry and Melvin Blackaby

Product Description
The first Christians “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6) shaking the gates of hell even in the face of severe persecution. The result: People all around “were filled with wonder and amazement” (Acts 3:10).What can give Christians today the same impact?
God’s Holy Spirit is ready to answer that for us in an awesome way, as Henry Blackaby and his son Mel Blackaby make clear in Experiencing the Spirit. You’ll see how the proof of the Spirit’s presence is our awareness of God’s personal assignments for us, plus our supernatural enablement to carry out those assignments. You’ll find essential clarification on the difference between natural talents and spiritual gifts. You’ll explore the dynamics of being filled with the Spirit through intimate relationship with Him, committed obedience, and radical departure from sin.
Instead of considering what you can do for God with your abilities and talents, you’ll be encouraged here to seek what God wants to do through you supernaturally by His Spirit, empowering you beyond your personal competence and capacities. Release the Holy Spirit’s work at the very core of your experience of the Christian life – as He releases you to serve God as never before.
About the Author
Dr. Henry Blackaby, president emeritus of Blackaby Ministries, is the author of more than a dozen books, including the bestselling classic,Experiencing God. He has spent his life in ministry, serving as a music director and as a senior pastor of churches in California and Canada. Today he provides consultative leadership on prayer for revival and spiritual awakening on a global level. He and his wife make their home in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Melvin Blackaby coauthored with his father, Henry, the Gold Medallion winner Experiencing God Together. He travels extensively as a conference speaker and serves as a senior pastor of Bow Valley Baptist Church in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada. He and his wife and their three children live in Canada.
My Review: I used this book as part of my morning devotions and was reminded again how when we do God’s work in our strength it falls flat, but when we do God’s work in the Holy Spirit’s strength His will is accomplished.  The book has a back and forth style between father and son.  I liked that.  Between the two of them are years of experience walking with God.  This book made me desire an even closer relationship with God and to experience His moving in my life.  I read one or two chapters a day and was reminded anew that Christianity is a relationship, and a relationship takes time and is ongoing.  Christianity is a supernatural faith and we should expect to see things happen.  The Blackaby men reminded me of this truth.

In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms by Dr. Laura

Friday, May 15th, 2009
Product Description
They number in the millions and they are incredibly important to families and to our society, yet they are underappreciated, little respected, and even controversial.
Who are they?
They are the stay-at-home moms.
These are women who know in their hearts that staying home to raise their children is the right choice for the whole family. Some do it from the outset of their marriages, while others make the difficult transition from career-driven women to homemakers. Either way, it is a choice that is incredibly rich and rewarding, not to mention challenging.
Now Dr. Laura, building on principles developed during her long career as a licensed marriage and family therapist, provides a wealth of advice and support, as well as compassion and inspiration, to women as they navigate the wonders and struggles of being stay-at-home moms.
Learn how:
  • to hold your head high and deal with naysayers;
  • to see the benefits of being home not only for your children but also for your marriage;
  • to understand the changes you see in yourself;
  • to realize that the sacrifices you endure now will make for lasting bonds and a stronger family, in addition to a more cohesive community.
My Review: I bought this book, not because I am currently a stay-at-home mom, but because I was one.  I was curious to read what Dr. Laura had to say and I wasn’t disappointed.  I stayed at home with my children for their young years and went to college when my youngest was in first grade.  After graduating, I began teaching and by then my children were in sixth, ninth, and eleventh grades.  I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have worked full time if their father’s job wasn’t flexible and one of us could be with them almost 100% of the time.  Now after teaching for 17 years, I can safely say that there is a difference in children who have moms that work and children who have stay at home moms.  Stay at home moms have time and energy to do all the little things and as a teacher, this includes helping with homework, reading to their children, and helping in the classroom – which is very important for a child’s educational experience.  Dr. Laura talked a lot about how much a mom misses when she pays somebody else to take care of her children.  This is also true.  I can’t imagine having missed any of my children’s firsts.  Dr. Laura also talks about the benefits of stay-at-home moms to their marriages.  Somebody actually has the energy and time to keep up with things and make the house a home.  The stay-at-home mom also has time for their children’s spiritual training, which was very important to me.  This was a great book and a fast read.  I recommend it to anyone who is considering staying at home with their children and it is a great encouragement to those who already do or have done this.

Review: Murder by Family by Kent Whitaker

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
About the Book: This is the tragic story of Kent Whitaker’s heart-wrenching journey toward forgiveness and faith after the brutal murder of his wife and one of his sons.
Straight from the headlines comes an incredible true story of a son’s treachery. For the first time, readers are offered inside access to the emotional drama that went on behind the scenes. At the core is the remarkable healing power of forgiveness, demonstrated by Kent Whitaker, which shows how the survivors of such atrocious events can still forgive those who have permanently damaged their lives.
One evening, the Whitaker family returned home after dinner, celebrating a son’s impending graduation from college. On opening the front door, they faced a gunman lying in wait. The gunman opened fire, instantly killing the younger sonand Kent’s wife, leaving Kent and his older son lying wounded until police and ambulances arrived. While recovering in the hospital, Kent resolved in his heart to forgive whoever was responsible for the deaths of his wife and son.
Over the next few weeks, it was discovered that the whole murder plot had been orchestrated by the surviving son — whom Kent had unknowingly forgiven. After a trial that resulted in a death sentence for his son, Kent emerged from this harrowing ordeal to share their astonishing journey toward forgiveness and redemption.
My Review: This story is nothing short of incredible. When I read the synopsis, I hadn’t heard of the crime and could only think that this was pretty much one of the worst things you could imagine happening to someone. For that very reason, it’s an incredible story about God.
What amazed me was that within just the first few hours of this all taking place, Kent felt compelled to forgive the person who had murdered his wife and son, and shot him and his other son. He is able to give this forgiveness right away, which sets the stage to offer even more healing and forgiveness. That’s not to say that there isn’t a tremendous amount of pain left to work through…there is, but taking that initial step of obedience made the rest of the story possible.
The writing is actually very good in this book as well. It at times almost reads like a novel. One of the things I really liked about this book was the way that Kent was so honest. He wasn’t afraid to share what his honest emotions were in certain situations, but he didn’t make excuses for them.
I highly recommend this book. It’s a great reminder of the power of God and the way He can use even the most damaging and painful situations in our lives for good.

Review: Voices of the Faithful by Beth Moore and friends

Monday, February 16th, 2009
Product Description
“A willingness to go is all they have in common,” exclaims Beth Moore, speaking of her friends on the front lines who are spreading the gospel around the world and with whom she collaborated to create this book. This brilliant 365-day devotional features incredible stories of God’s faithfulness in the face of uncertainty and danger, written by hundreds of missionaries worldwide.
My Review: I’ve been using this devotional as part of my quiet time for about a month now, and I love it.  The true stories from real live missionaries are truly inspiring.  Having been part of the Christian and MISSIONARY Alliance since I’ve been married, I love missionary stories.  They are just real people, who in many ways battle the same things we do, with the added aspect of being in another country.  I highly recommend this devotional.  Beth Moore compiled this book and wrote the introduction.  The missionaries are from all around the world.

Review: Parting the Waters by Jeanne Damoff

Friday, January 30th, 2009
About the Book: When a tragic drowning accident leaves fifteen-year-old Jacob in a coma, the faith of his family and community is shaken to its foundation. Medical experts used phrases such as “persistent vegetative state” and said, “Jacob will never wake up,” but Jacob’s parents knew God would have the final say.
Without sugar-coating the realities of pain and suffering, Parting the Waters presents the heart-warming, true story of what can happen when a community rallies around one wounded family. While Jacob’s parents struggle to preserve their faith and family, the prayers and innovative efforts of community members result in Jacob’s gradual awakening. Each dramatic milestone in Jacob’s recovery creates a new ripple, touching and changing many lives forever.
Told from a mother’s perspective, Parting the Waters is a poignant tale of unexpected beauty found in brokenness.
Bonus feature: a “Q & A” section that fearlessly tackles issues regarding God, His love and mercy, and His divine purposes related to suffering.
My Review: Parting the Waters is a touching memoir about how God can use even the most heartbreaking of life events to draw people to Him. It’s not an easy read, and Ms. Damoff spares us nothing…she is completely honest with her feelings throughout the book about this tragic event. And because she is, this book is very authentic and inspiring. The process of dealing with suffering is a gradual one…and even when she can see that God has brought good things from Jacob’s accident, she grieves all that he has lost.
Jacob makes many miraculous recoveries…small victories in his very difficult battle. And God uses everyone around the family to bring support and hope. The community effort involved blew me away.
This is a great book for anyone. If you have ever faced a huge disappointment in life, I also think you will enjoy this book.

Review: Multiple Blessings – Jon & Kate Gosselin with Beth Carson

Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Product Description
In Multiple Blessings, Kate Gosselin shares the gripping details of her rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows when she discovered she and her husband, Jon, would be expecting sextuplets while still basking in the light of their twin girls’ toddlerhood. Strongly encouraged to consider selective reduction for the sake of both mother and babies, she and Jon instead decided to accept the extreme challenge God had handed them. After suffering the long and winding road of infertility, the young couple felt stressed but blessed as they fought valiantly to help their babies survive the fight for their lives. Kate reveals excerpts from her private journal as she describes the daily struggle to carry the babies for thirty weeks. In addition to their uphill medical battle, the family suffered many emotional setbacks such as the loss of Jon’s job, forcing the pair to look to God as their sole provider and sustainer of life.
After the miraculous birth, the couple coped with months of neonatal intensive care for their newborns as well as Kate’s physical recovery from such complete and prolonged bed rest. Later as the entire family of ten finally arrived home reeling with exhaustion, they still managed to feed, bathe, clothe, and monitor the health of their fragile infants as a steady parade of necessary and helpful volunteers turned their home and family life into a public arena.
The young family lived moment to moment at first, not knowing what each new day would bring and how they would survive on such depleted sleep, money, and emotional reserves. However, as the months progressed, they grew into the next stage of development, proudly letting go of yesterday and looking forward to a brighter and ever-changing tomorrow. Their small home was soon filled to capacity with six cribs, six bouncy seats, several changing tables, never-ending piles of laundry, tubs of colorful toys, stacks of diapers, cartons of formula, rows and rows of bottles, bibs and pacifiers, two triplet strollers, six car seats, and so on. Yes, life was hectic and cramped, but with each major milestone Jon and Kate rejoiced at the miracles that unfolded around them. The crew of six growing babies along with their proud big sisters, Madelyn and Cara, did their part to fill those rooms with squawking, squealing, laughing, and of course, a healthy dose of crying. Kate and Jon eventually came out of the fog of the first precarious two years feeling eternally grateful for the love and support of family, friends, community, and indeed a nation. More important, they felt the ever present hand of a faithful God upholding them and giving them just enough strength and courage to take one day at a time.

My Review:  Jon and Kate plus 8 became my new favorite show last summer.  The children are so darn cute!  The book goes a little deeper into the spiritual lives of this family.  I appreciated that because I noticed Bible verses posted all over the kitchen, but it was never mentioned on the show.
The book is mostly written from Kate’s point of view.  I got a little more insight into who she is.  The TV show tends to portray her as very type A and very bossy.  From the show you assume she loves her husband, but in the book you KNOW she does.  This book was very enjoyable and answered questions I had that the TV show didn’t.  If you enjoy reading about families, you will love this book.

Review: 3-D World Atlas and Tour by Marie Javins

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Product Description
Much more than an atlas, this book is also a virtual travel experience! It includes more than 40 maps, 30 feature articles on famous places, and 46 eye-popping 3-D photos of the world’s most interesting sights. Readers visit the Grand Canyon, look down from the top of the Eiffel Tower, ’snorkel’ in the Great Barrier Reef, peek inside a blue ice cave in Antarctica, and more! Physical maps are also rendered in 3-D, so mountains bulge out from the page.
My Review:  This book is so awesome!  What a concept – 3-D World.  The pictures are great!  I brought this into my class and the children fought over who would look at it during free time.  I had to make up a schedule!  They could look at this book for hours – and just to think of all the learning that will sneak into that time!  I noticed this book is in our January Scholastic book order, and I can’t wait to see how many of the children order it.  I highly recommend this book – children LOVE it!

Are women really the weaker sex? The intriguing medical facts that settle the oldest argument of all Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1017243/Are-women-really-weaker-sex-The-intriguing-medical-facts-settle-oldest-argument-all.html#ixzz0beJdNlU6

he two most common forms of cancer to affect both men and women are colo-rectal and lung cancer. More men than women suffer from both.
When it comes to colo-rectal cancer, diet and lifestyle play a role, but, says Lucy Boyd, an epidemiologist at Cancer Research UK, 'there could be a hormonal factor'.
tarzan
Oldest argument: A panel of medical experts try to determine whether women really are the weakest sex

Not only are women less likely to get colorectal cancer - around 55 men per 100,000 men are affected, compared with 35 women - but women who have taken the combined Pill or HRT are even less likely. The Pill and HRT both contain oestrogen.

'Oestrogen is protective against bowel cancer,' Boyd explains. The theory is that oestrogen has an effect on insulin. Being overweight puts you at greater risk of colorectal cancer, possibly because the body produces more insulin.
However, overweight women are not as at risk as overweight men, and that's possibly because the oestrogen 'cancels out some of the effect', says Boyd. As for lung cancer, men are at greater risk simply because they have tended to smoke more than women.
Weaker sex: MEN

BONES

The male skeleton is bigger and gives them an inherent advantage - larger bones are generally stronger,' says endocrinologist Professor Ignac Fogelman, a consultant physician in nuclear medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust. Stronger bones mean fewer breaks.

Men also benefit because they don't experience the menopause, which can cause sudden loss in bone density as a result of oestrogen levels dropping.
That is not to say men don't suffer bone loss as they age, but because they start with more bone, they can afford to lose a bit, says the National Osteoperosis Society.

Professor Fogelman adds: 'Men do get osteoporosis, but it is usually to do with genetic factors, long-term use of corticosteroids, alcoholism or unknown factors.'

Men also tend not to suffer from broken hips in old age. Breaking a hip is dangerous: one in ten patients dies within a month, a quarter within six months. 'The most common fracture in those over 80, the hip fracture, is relatively uncommon in men,' says Fogelman. 'Men don't live long enough.'

Women also lose out with osteoarthritis. According to the Arthritis Research Campaign, twice as many women as men get osteoarthritis in their hands and four times as many women as men get it in their knees. The genders are equal only when it comes to osteorarthritis in their hips.

Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear - again, men are at an advantage because they start out with bigger, stronger bones which can take more punishment.
Weaker sex: WOMEN

HEART

Coronary heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK. True, more men get it - but it also affects millions of women (1.5 million men, compared with 1.1 million women). 'The perception is that it's a male disease,' says Judy O'Sullivan, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation. 'Some women think it doesn't matter if they are 38, smoke 20 a day and are five stone overweight. They think they won't get a heart attack, but they do.'

However, women have one advantage: it's that female hormone oestrogen again, which this time has a cardio-protective effect. 'The mechanism is not fully understood,' explains O'Sullivan. Pre-menopausal women do get heart attacks, but most female heart disease occurs after the menopause, when a woman's oestrogen level declines.

Weaker sex: MEN

MUSCLES

There has been a lot of controversy in the sports world about whether men's apparent physical advantage is on the wane. A look at the bulging muscles sported by some female Wimbledon champions proves that female sportswomen aren't the delicate flowers they once were - some experts have argued that women will eventually equal men's speed and strength.

But the fact is that men generally have bigger, stronger muscles. As Harry Brennan, an exercise physiologist at the Institute of Sport, says: 'There was a period in the Seventies when women equalled or broke more world records than men, but that was before the fall of the Berlin Wall.'

In other words, this was the era when Eastern Bloc coaches were feeding female athletes steroids like sweets.

'It now looks as if the gap is widening,' Brennan says. 'At a hormonal level, men have 10 per cent more testosterone.' Testosterone helps the body lay down more muscle. 'This is why men tend to be more muscly,' explains Brennan.

Still, if men are stronger, aren't women - with their smaller, lighter bodies - more agile? Apparently not. 'Agility depends upon the ability to decelerate and accelerate fast, and men - because of their larger muscles - will always have an advantage,' says Brennan.

But if men are stronger, faster and more agile, women are more flexible. 'Women's smaller muscle mass and joint geometry, and the difference in ligament structure, allows for more flexibility,' says Brennan. So, a woman could pick a dirty sock off the floor, no problem, while a man would have to bend. That's if he noticed the sock in the first place.

Weaker sex: WOMEN

EYE & EAR PROBLEMS

Neither hearing nor sight loss is gender related, although as both tend to worsen with age, women report more of both because they live longer.

Weaker sex: NEITHER

BRAIN

Mental health is an area where men appear not to fare well. For a start, men are more than twice as likely to be affected by schizophrenia. 'Up to 40 per cent more men are diagnosed with schizophrenia than women - and their symptoms tend to be more severe and treatment less effective,' explains Jane Harris of the charity Rethink.

'There are lots of competing theories about what causes schizophrenia, but most experts think it is down to a combination of nature and nurture.'

There is evidence for a genetic link to schizophrenia, and it's thought certain behaviours may 'switch on' this gene or genes. As Harris says: 'Men are more likely to do things that put them at risk of developing schizophrenia - such as smoking cannabis. Medical research shows that heavy cannabis users are up to four times more likely to develop psychosis.'

Boys are also more likely to be diagnosed with the developmental conditions autism and Asperger's syndrome. The Autism Society says boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with the condition than girls.

This may be because they are exposed to higher levels of testosterone before birth, affecting their brain development, according to research by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen from the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge.

But not all conditions affecting the brain are more concentrated in the male section of the population. 'Women get postnatal depression, and the menopause can be a trigger for depression,' says Marjorie Wallace, founder of mental health charity Sane. Depression is more common in women - one in four (three million) women will require treatment for depression at some time, compared with one in ten men.

This higher rate of depression means that, when it comes to mental health, more women are affected overall.

Weaker sex: WOMEN

IMMUNE SYSTEM

Another intriguing difference between the sexes is in immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism.

'Women are three times as likely to get rheumatoid arthritis as men,' says Dr Annabel Bentley, Bupa's assistant medical director (around 375,000 women have the disease, compared with 125,000 men).
One theory is that there is a hormonal link. 'Rheumatoid arthritis tends to improve during pregnancy, although the mechanism is unknown,' says Bentley.

Diabetes prevention in GCC gets boost as over 1,000 international medical practitioners share expert

Diabetes
Diabetes prevention efforts in the GCC received a significant boost with the UAE's successful hosting of the Emirates Diabetes Congress (EDC) 2009, which concluded recently with over 1,000 delegates from the US, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East participating in various workshops, symposia and networking activities, according to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a global healthcare industry partner in fighting diabetes.
GSK pointed out that the two-day congress provided a gateway for the region's medical practitioners and institutions to access the latest international expertise and knowledge in the prevention of diabetes, while serving as an important complementary initiative to the 'GCC Diabetes Executive Plan for 2008-2018,' which aims to increase awareness on the risks as well as management and prevention of the disease.
Dr. Nauman Rashid, Clinical Research & Medical Affairs Director, in GSK Middle East and North Africa, said: "The major technological breakthroughs in the field of medicine have enabled GSK and other key players in the pharmaceutical industry to introduce highly effective medicines for some of the most serious diseases today. The Emirates Diabetes Congress was an excellent venue to showcase to the region some of the latest achievements and medical findings, particularly in the area of diabetes prevention and management. Diabetes is a serious threat, especially here in the Middle East region, which is why we consider it crucially important that medical practitioners, healthcare institutions and the public remain adequately informed about the latest pharmaceutical developments in preventing this potentially deadly disease."
Dr. Iyad Ksseiry, chair of the scientific committee for EDC 2009 said: "It is very encouraging to see such a great number of medical experts and specialists from all over the world converging here in Dubai to help in addressing the challenges of diabetes prevention. We seek to build on the success of this Congress as we continue to raise awareness about the latest best practices and medical breakthroughs that help prevent and treat diabetes."
The Congress provided focus on recent advancements and landmark clinical studies in the treatment of diabetes. One of the recent studies has enlightened the public about the properties of anti-diabetic drugs by presenting various diabetes-related studies, including the Rosiglitazone Evaluated for Cardiac Outcomes and Regulation of Glycaemia in Diabetes (RECORD) trial, which showed that the anti-diabetic drug rosiglitazone, which is marketed by GSK with the brand name Avandia, has the best rate of durable blood sugar control and was superior to other conventional diabetes medicines. The same study also revealed that Avandia has no increased overall cardiovascular risk compared with other diabetes medicines.
The latest findings in the study of medicines for diabetes is crucially significant for the UAE as the country has the second largest incidence of diabetes in the world, with over 20 per cent of the population reported to be diabetic. The Ministry of Health has further revealed that diabetes-related heart ailments accounted for 31.6 per cent of deaths, making it the number killer disease in 2008. Unhealthy food and lifestyle were cited as the major cause of diabetes, which has cost the UAE between USD 100 million to USD 200 million annually for treatment alone.
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) produces medicines that treat major disease areas such as diabetes, asthma, virus control, infections, mental health and digestive conditions. GSK is also a leader in the important area of vaccines and has been a leading developer of new treatments for cancer. GSK is also one of the few pharmaceutical companies researching both medicines and vaccines for the World Health Organisation's three priority diseases - HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria - resulting in the development of some of the leading global medicines in these fields.
